A heat pump works all year in central Florida

A heat pump is an air conditioner that can run in reverse. In summer it moves heat out of the house; on cold mornings it pulls heat from the outside air and brings it in. Most also have electric heat strips in the air handler as a backup.

Because it works in both seasons, a heat pump has parts a plain AC doesn't: a reversing valve, a defrost control and its sensors, and the backup heat circuit. When one of those fails you may see a unit that cools but won't heat, an outdoor coil that stays iced, or an electric bill that jumps because the heat strips are doing all the work.

On cold, damp mornings it is normal to see steam rising from the outdoor unit and hear it go quiet for a few minutes. That is the defrost cycle. Ice that stays for hours is not.

Before you call

Five minutes of checks

  1. Thermostat mode: Heat or Cool, not Emergency Heat (unless the contractor told you to use it).
  2. Breakers for both the outdoor unit and the air handler; heat strips often have their own breaker.
  3. A thin frost on cold mornings is normal. A thick block of ice that doesn't clear after an hour is not.
  4. Leaves, pine needles and grass clippings on top of or around the outdoor unit. Clear them with the power off.
  5. A sudden jump in the power bill in a cold snap can mean the backup heat is running constantly. Mention it.

What a heat pump technician checks

So you know what to expect from the contractor and what to ask.

Reversing valve

Switches between heating and cooling. If it sticks, the system runs in one mode only.

Defrost controls

The board and sensors that clear ice from the outdoor coil in winter.

Backup heat strips

Elements, relays and limits in the air handler that heat the house when the heat pump can't keep up.

Refrigerant charge

Low charge hurts both heating and cooling. Low means a leak.

Thermostat setup

Heat pump thermostats are wired differently from AC-and-furnace setups. Wrong wiring causes odd behaviour.

Outdoor coil and fan

Airflow through the outdoor coil matters in both seasons.

Planning figures

Heat Pump Repair: typical planning ranges

Read this first. These are typical planning ranges for common jobs, not quotes, local averages or price guarantees. The contractor prices your job after seeing the system: tonnage, efficiency, refrigerant type, access and what else turns up all move the figure.

Heat Pump Repair: common questions

Why is steam coming off my heat pump?

On cold, damp mornings the outdoor coil frosts over. The heat pump runs a defrost cycle to melt it, and that makes steam. A few minutes of it is normal.

What is Emergency Heat?

It turns off the heat pump and heats with the electric backup strips only. It works, but it uses much more electricity. Use it only while you wait for a repair.

Is a heat pump worth repairing or should I switch to a different system?

In a mild-winter climate like Ocala's, a heat pump is a common choice for new systems too. Whether to repair depends on age and repair cost; see repair or replace.

Does it cost anything to call?

No. The call and the connection are free to you. The contractor you are connected with may pay us for the referral. Whatever you agree with them for the work is between you and that company.
